In Memoriam

Until his death in October 2009, Dr Derek Wilkinson was Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities at Laurentian University. He was the Director of the INORD for ten years, a principal researcher in the internationally renowned New Rural Economy Project. He was Co-Director of the largest study of any northern community, the 8-year Elliot Lake Tracking Study. Derek grew up in Copper Cliff, attended Queen's University and the London School of Economics.

Derek's passing is a loss to his friends and to Laurentian, but it is also a significant loss for Northern Ontario. He was dedicated to promoting his community and the region. Among his many contributions, Derek did survey research for the Northern Lights festival/Festival Boreal, co-founded the Social Planning Council of Sudbury and was instrumental in launching the Campaign for the Northern Ontario School of Architecture. He will be missed
